Level39 member Vesuvio Labs is currently working with seven talented young people under the Kickstart Scheme, launched by the UK Government in September 2020. Through the scheme, employers can offer young people, aged 16–24, who are claiming Universal Credit a six-month work placement.

Vesuvio has offered placements in various areas such as Business Analysis, Business Development, Data Science and Marketing, with each placement supporting Vesuvio’s growth by providing new ideas, and fresh perspectives.

The scheme is exciting, says Darren Chow, Analyst at Vesuvio, as new and different perspectives are vital in creating a successful ventures, and the team can identify future possible candidates for a permanent role as the company grows:

“Having a different set of eyes from someone else is always a good thing as we might miss things, or things might not be clear to people viewing the product or service for the first time. The placements are bringing in an extra set of hands, for work that they can take on with some guidance such as BRD and wireframing, as well as new skills we do not currently have much experience in, like video design and editing.”

As for the people being given work through Kickstart, the scheme offers a vital opportunity to expand their skills, as well as make that all-important breakthrough into their desired fields. Tasbia Pretty, Vesuvio’s Marketing Assistant who joined the team through the Kickstart scheme, says:

“The role of Marketing assistant at Vesuvio Labs has been a great experience so far, having the opportunity to expand my skillset in the field and increasing my insurance and tech acumen. My day-to-day consists of supporting the communications team with managing the social media accounts, producing content for the websites, producing copy, newsletters, helping with the management of the Medium account, and much more.”

Opportunities like these are important for the people working and hiring under the scheme, but also for the industry as a whole, as they offer young people to develop their interest in tech and gain invaluable experience for their careers ahead. The Kickstart scheme supports growth not only now, but looking ahead to the future as well.
